THURSDAY: SAN JOSE PREVIEW

Red Bulls Reader chatted with some players about the team's upcoming match with San Jose and got their assessments of what the Red Bulls need to do.

Kevin Goldthwaite:

Seth Stammler:

In some side notes:
Kevin was drafted by San Jose in the 2nd round (17th overall) of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft.

The teams have met 24 times with the Earthquakes (the San Jose franchise held o to the history when the former Quakes moved to Houston - a bit confusing but still true) holding a 13-6-5 advantage in the series. New York is 4-4-4 all time at home vs. San Jose, and is 1-1-4 in the last six matches at Giants Stadium against the Earthquakes. The two teams played to a 5-5 tie on 5/8/04 at San Jose, which is the highest scoring tie in franchise history and matches the most goals combined in franchise history (6-4 win at Dallas on 8/26/00).

Sunday’s match will mark the first time that Juan Carlos Osorio has been the head coach against the San Jose franchise. San Jose head coach Frank Yallop is 2-1-3 as SJ coach vs. New York, and 3-3-4 overall as head coach vs. New York.

Six New York Red Bulls have played against the San Jose franchise (Mike Magee, John Wolyniec, Chris Leitch, Jeff Parke, Seth Stammler, and Carlos Mendes).

Two Red Bulls have played for San Jose earlier in their careers. Jon Conway and Kevin Goldthwaite each played in San Jose. Conway was the Earthquakes third round selection in 2000 and won two MLS Cups during his time there. Goldthwaite played his first professional season in San Jose in 2005.

Three San Jose players once played for New York (Ramiro Corrales, Jason Hernandez, and Joe Vide). All three have appeared this season, with Corrales and Hernandez starting all three matches so far. Vide was selected by San Jose in the MLS Expansion Draft.
