The team played terrible. Not a little bit bad or ridiculously unfortunate, the Red Bulls came out flat, played a terrible 1-5-4 and looked more flat than at any point this season. If there were any positives, I must have missed them. Jozy scored a goal? Great.
Jon Conway is the worst keeper in MLS. His gaff on the last goal should have gotten him pulled. I would rather see Thornton than him and I still think loaning Cepero out was dumb and not trying to trade something or someone for a real goalkeeper?
We keep picking up defenders when our number one pick isn't signed. We sign forwards when we have two of the best in the league and instead of strengthening the team by adding quality attacking midfielders, we sign more interchangeable pieces and give Reyna the room to blunder and scrape through another terrible performance.
It's as if I'm still watching the Metrostars and nothing has changed, good mid-fielders good forwards (best in the league IMO) and absolutely no defense what so ever.
I swear, we got a defensive minded coach who hasn't bought any good defenders in. I get it he wanted Conde and he wanted Mármol and didn't get them but he should have had more defenders lined up to buy and now we got nothing but mediocre defender at best. We better get something when the transfer season opens up and I hope to God we get Kewell so we could put Rena back to a defensive midfielder role and have a real attacking midfield at top.
*Sigh* 5-1 at home is a disgrace and it bothers me more that it's Chicago b/c of what's been happening with Conde and Marmol.
I have faith in JCO b/c I think he's a great coach but our backline is terrible on every level and we need a leader back there.
Heartless, gutless performance from you, Red Bulls. Boyens should be nowhere NEAR a professional field. Reyna should f'n RETIRE already.
JCO should be ashamed for putting up such a cowardly line-up. At home, good crowd, 5-4-1?! Jozy on the bench?! Magee too?
Sure we were missing Stammler badly & Van den Burg, but MENDEZ at midfield?
Absolutely ashamed. Brought newcomers with me, one of whom was a 7 year-old who asked me if "maybe Osorio is still coaching the Fire?"
Dig that! That's how it felt!
-g benton, ny ny season tix holder since '99.
Why does there seem to be so little interest in Red Bull Soccer?
I am a FC Dallas supporter and checked your blog after our teams played a few weeks ago and was shocked by how few people had a take on what appeared to me to be a very lackadaisical performance from the entire team.
Last week after our Sunday afternoon debacle, there were some 40 posts on our blog by the next morning. NY has a larger and more diverse population then Dallas, why such disinterest?
The team was not playing it's game today, saying that, there is no excuse for their performance today. Sorry to say, but Reyna needs to retire, van den burg was out and so was osorio. This should not have meant a loss, but it did make a difference. The Fire had a good matchup with the right back defense of Richards which made problems to get early balls into the box. There were some fighting spirit in borman, who took every chance to get the ball and try for goal.
Don't be too hard on the team, they had a bad game, it is now on to the next match and our comeback. We play great football and we can be champions!
One of the most embarrasing moments in team history, I hope that people in the Red Bulls front office are reading this. How can you go into a game with that lineup, basically 6 defenders and Reyna as your attacking mid, thats a recipe for disaster. Omce i saw that lineup i knew it wouldnt be a good day. Mendes in the midfield, i cant even blame Mendes, he is a defender. Reyna as an attacking midfielder he has no attacking skill, how can I see that and Osorio cant, if you have Altidore on your team he has to play, and as a forward. I hope we dont see that lineup again and that another midfielder is signed. You cant go into a home game against Chicago and be afraid to lose, Chicaho isnt Barcelona or Man U. The respect we gave them was embarrasing. In this game many fans came to see Blanco, if we gave them a good show they might have returned, all we did was embarrass ourselves and Osorio was the main culprit. Chicago beats us in everything.
Glad to see that almost everyone agrees. I just wish the front office was reading this and dumps Reyna and Conway. Look at Hartman's performance two weeks ago. A consistent performance like his helps the defense because the defense doesn't quit on a keeper who is busting his ass in games and doing what should be impossible because of great positioning. Even Busch yesterday had the same effect on his defense.
Conway is not a leader of men and certainly not this defense. Reyna needs to go but that's Arena's fault he is around at all. What a waste this season is going to be when we come out with a lineup like that at home. What the hell were we afraid of? Angel's production this season is down because of the lack of an attacking presence in midfield.
Want to know why there's no interest in Red Bull soccer? We suck and have no consistency as an organization. None.
Ok Shawn.. Nice to see that you only found TWO players to blame out of the whole team, especially since 4 of those 5 goals weren't Conway's fault.. The one that slid under him, very bad mistake; but the others were very good shots that the red bulls did not defend well against.. Also, Reyna has just returned from injury so it will take some time before he will be 100%.. And did you notice that almost 90% of the crosses and shots were coming from ONE SIDE (ANDREW BOYENS' SIDE!!!).. So if anybody should be solely blamed, it should be Boyens, I definitely think he should be a reserve because although he is tall, there is no other positive about him and his play.. He's slow, clumsy, and inexperienced.. I also have to blame the offense because although Chicago's goals WERE the DEFENCE'S fault, what about OUR GOALS? exactly, only ONE GOAL!! and what about our shots? Oh, wait, we only had TWO SHOTS ON GOALLLLLLL... Notice how we always win or at least tie when we have more shots on goal.. Next game at Houston, watch us win if we have more shots on GOAL... Defence IS important, but you DEFINITELY cant win a game if you dont even take good SHOTS.. We had two shots and we MADE ONE out of them.. Which means we can score, all we have to do is TAKE THE SHOTS..
Almedin - Hey bro, thanks for responding. Actually, I called one player out twice (Conway, who sucked in SJ and hasn't improved a bit. He's still one dimensional, he's a shot stopper. That's it) what bothers me the most is that I sincerely feel that with a better keeper, the defense would be able to go through its growing pains. It's easy to say that only 1 was generally his fault, but if he (Conway) had any footspeed or any range on crosses, those stupid headers on his six don't end up in the net. He ends up a hero and not a total goat.
I criticize him because I've been there and I feel his pain, but if the team is playing terrible, the more things you can do to eliminate those dumb, simple looking goals, the better.
If he grabs the corner and/or Blanco's cross in the second half (and both were at the six) no shot on goal. I won't sit here and pretend I am better than him, he's just not versatile and while I wish he could be successful, a keeper like him will only flounder in NYRB system.
Reyna has been really bad all year. Even before his injury, dude, he's a mess, his first touch is into his body and he has no left. It sucks, I want him to succeed, but he isn't an attacker and he plays terrible defense as well.
Boyens is a joke and I called out the organization for taking him when we have other needs as well. We need a attacking inner mid and some heart. Heart comes from gritty performances and Conway, Boyens, Reyna, Osorio, and the Red Bull organization are part of the problem here.
I was at this game on Sunday and it was by far the worst game that I have ever seen. Like most people said the team seemed flat and disinterested the whole game.
Their passing was sloppy and their defense left Fire players open all of the place. Conway was just plan bad, some sloppy goals allowed. Reyna is old and not a factor anymore. Angel barely touched the ball the whole game.
Blanco on the other hand was brilliant. He made great passes all night long and he was always in a position to make a play. Rofle played a great game as well.
This team I taught could challenge for a title, but our defense needs a big improvement.
Shawn, you're absolutely right about Boyens, I dont even know why we bothered signing him when we could have signed guillermo imhoff, a south american young defender that played in europe.. He would be ten times better on defence.. As for Freeman, Goldthwaite, and Parke, I like their defence and that game was just a VERY bad day for the whole Red Bulls, nothing went right for them.. You're right that Conway should have stopped those 6-yard crosses, but it is also the defences fault for leaving chicago so open and just letting them have those chances close to the goal.. The ball-watching at times didnt help either.. And Reyna IS getting old, but im sure he can get us at least something throughout this season, at least until we can sign another designated player..
I couldn't agree more with the negative posts about the game on Sunday. It was downright embarrassing. Conway (like any other goalie at this level) must make at least one or two great plays a game. He made none. Reyna continues to dissappoint. Frankly he's hurting the team. His decline has been staggering. I can't believe they opened with a 1-5-4 at home!....and left Jozy on the bench. Angel is a different player when Jozy is on the field. He's far more active and open due to the space Jozy creates. The defense was sad. Boyens was the weak link but I also believe when you have inexperienced players in the lineup others like Parke (who's an extremely talented defender) and Conway have to step up and take control in the back. The fourth Chicago goal was the perfect example with a wide open header resulting from bad communication in the back.
Hopefully they bounce back in a big way and go down to Houston and steal some points.
